Ayaan, a fervent musician who played the sitar like the wind wrote through trees, lived in the center of Lahore's old city beneath crumbling rooftops and courtyards scented with jasmine. Until he met Zara, a literature student with a calm spirit and a storm in her eyes, he thought music was the only truth. At a poetry reading on the roof, their worlds collided. He saw her just watching, as if she were reading the music itself, while Ayaan was performing. She wasn't clapping or smiling. He approached her after his performance, half expecting silence. Zara, however, surprised him. She stated, "You play like you've already lost something." He responded, "And you read as if you’re still searching." Their lives became intertwined at that point. Long walks by the canal, chai at midnight, debates about Rumi and Faiz, and music that healed wounds they didn’t know existed.  Ayaan referred to her as his "Saiyaara," which translates to "star" in Arabic. But love, like melody, needs rhythm.  Their relationship was discovered by Zara's father, a retired colonel with rigid views. Because he regarded Ayaan as a "wanderer with no future," he prohibited her from seeing him. Under the ancient Sheesh Mahal, Zara met Ayaan for the final time, torn between duty and love. As she held onto his hand, she whispered, "I want to run away." He replied, his eyes wet, "No." "Love is not love if it runs. It fights.  I'll fight, too." They pledged to never forget to live their truths, even if they had to live apart. The time passed. Ayaan made the move to Karachi, put his longing into music, and soon he was a household name. His albums were filled with hope and sorrow. The song "Saiyaara," which was influenced by Zara, became a hit all over the country. He never got married or settled down. He claimed that his heart was still beating. In the meantime, Zara kept her word and kept her promise. She got married to a man her family picked for her. He was kind, stable, and didn't have the fire her soul desired. She taught poetry and became a teacher, smiling gracefully. But on certain nights, she would press her hand against her chest, where the sound of Ayaan's voice was still present, as she listened to his songs on the radio. It appeared that fate was not finished. Ayaan was invited to perform at a charity concert in Islamabad ten years later. Zara, a well-known author, was asked to read one of her most recent poems. They didn't realize they were on the same roster until they saw each other backstage. He froze. She looked up. Both needed to be said. Ayaan played "Saiyaara" once more that night in front of a quiet crowd. He sang it while looking at her, the real star of the show, for the first time in years. After that, Zara went to the stage and read: "Stars remember, not collide." Music is created rather than broken hearts. And romance? In truth, love does not wait in time. There is no dramatic reunion or escape. Honoring the love that made them who they were, just two souls who are now at peace. Ayaan plays his sitar while sitting alone by a lake in the final scene. "Why do you always look at the stars when you play?" a young girl inquires. He responds with a gentle smile, "Because one of them once glanced back." There is no happily ever after in Saiyaara. It is a story about love that never ends, the kind that molds you even though it never stays. a reminder that not all stars need to fall; all they need to do is shine.
